I had pretty good (1480) SATs, a decent GPA (something like 3.9), several extracurriculars to which I was genuinely committed, and I wrote my essay on an issue of particular significance to me--I think this was really the key, because if you are passionate about your paper, this will translate to the admissions officers as a passionate and interested person in general.

In short, all the standard Ivy qualifications apply, but it's a bit easier to get in here.

You simply have to show the admissions committee that you're a unique student, show them that they need someone like you around and that you need Penn in your life as well. The competition is probably less tough for international students and legacy students. Penn doesn't want people who are merely eager to go to college and develop themselves etc, they want people that are certain that Penn is for them. They want to see eagerness and productive curiosity.

I did a lot to get inAug 15 2005Economics
I did a lot to get in. I was president of 3 clubs senior year and active in many more clubs throughout my high school years. I performed at the 99th percentile on all the standardized tests (I took 8 SAT IIs and 11 AP exams). I lead my school band to five 2nd places at state (in Texas) over 2 years. I also won three first places at state in band over the course of 2 years. I researched with a renowned string theorist and published my group's findings in the physical review D (national physics anthology). I won many awards for varsity basketball and varsity tennis including sportsmanship awards, MVP for junior varsity basketball, and 2nd and 3rd at state for tennis. I won first place for every single math, science, and latin award at my school for four straight years. I volunteered over 700 hours during my high school experience. I have many other accolades left unmentioned here.

Pen is a big school so even if you don't have the best grades or the most extracurricular activities you still have a shot at getting in. Try to make yourself standout. Show them that you are unique in some way. The best time for this is on your app or during your interview.
